The Changes
“Stay as you are, don’t ever change.”
We all have heard that or said it to someone at some point in our life. But do we understand what it truly means? Is it possible to not change, stay the same f
forever?
As per my understanding and I believe Lord Tennyson would agree, we can not stay the same, change is inevitable, one might say its impossible to stay the same yet once in a while we would meet someone from our past and end up hearing or saying, “You haven’t changed a bit!” or some other version of it.
Which begs the question how is it possible that for one person we haven’t changed but for others we aren’t the same person or we have changed.
As far as I can tell its not possible to stay the same forever, people are bound to change, one way or another. It’s a natural process that can not be hindered, that is essential for the development of our mind, heart and personality. Take a gander at the history of mankind, its nothing if not a story of changes. At each and every point of this story changes occurred whether people liked it or not and those who couldn’t adapt are now forgotten.
In reality when we say, “don’t change” to someone it doesn’t mean what we perceive it to mean, what we desire is to feel the same forever. Allow me to expound, we all radiate energy which can make the people around us feel a certain way. It can be the result of our actions or behavior or mere words and sometimes the energy that we radiate is so strong and beautiful that it makes the person next to us feel good about themselves, and that is one of the basic desires or any human, to feel good and happy about themselves.
I believe it’s the way that we feel around certain people that we want to preserve, that we don’t want to change and that’s what it truly means when we ask people not to change but that’s just one aspect. There could be numerous reasons why we say it someone. It could be because they remind us something or someone or even our past selves that we miss or it could be because we care for them and maybe in the chaotic world they seem to be resolved and naïve and uncorrupted. But in the end, it is for our selfish reasons we make such futile wish.
