Mental health is a silent companion of our digital lives. It walks with us as we scroll, click, like, and post. And yet, somewhere behind those seemingly harmless actions lies a system we do not see, one that quietly shapes our moods, thoughts, and sometimes, our well-being. That system is called the algorithm. Social media algorithms are built to keep us hooked. But what happens when that design comes at a cost, a cost we pay with our peace of mind? The dark side that feeds on our emotions, grudges, and wellness.
At the heart of every social media platform is a powerful engine, the algorithm. It decides what we see, what we miss, and how often something shows up in our feeds. And its only goal? Engagement. No matter whether it is leading to content psychosis or negative addiction, keeping the users hooked is all it cares about. According to World Health Organisation, a finding that came from the Health behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, more than 1 in 10 adolescents showed signs of problematic social media behaviour where girls reported higher levels of problematic social media use than boys.
The more we comment, argue, share, or get emotional, the more valuable we become to the platform. If a post sparks outrage or heated debate, it often gets boosted. If a reel triggers comparison or envy, it might land on your explore page. Why? Because engagement does not care whether it is healthy, it cares that it is just happening. Trolls, cyberbullying, and controversial opinions are not mere glitches in the system. Sometimes, they are the system.

Algorithms tend to favor polished, curated content. The perfect vacation, the ideal body, the dream lifestyle, it is all over our feeds. Thus, just be smart enough. Learn to detect the dark patterns. Be aware of the content that is taking an emotional toll on you. We can pause the scroll, log out when needed, and take back control.
